Emily Thorn Corthay, MASc., P.Eng, CEM, CMVP, is Founder & CEO of Thorn Associates, a decarbonization and energy management consulting corporation specializing in the mining & metals sector, and past Director of Energy Optimization and Management at Hatch Ltd., an international engineering consulting firm.
Awarded the 2020 International Energy Engineer of the Year by the Association of Energy Engineers and the 2018 Laureate of the RelèveTO Young Professional Award, Emily has helped her clients to implement over $100M in energy savings and >500,000 tCO2e reduction through decarbonization strategies, energy/carbon audits, energy/carbon design reviews, energy efficiency and electrification improvement projects, energy management information system studies and implementation.
Emily is Past Chair of the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers’ (OSPE’s) Energy Task Force and was an elected Director of the OSPE Board (2016-2019) whose volunteer impacts were recognized with Emily being selected for the 2021 OSPE President’s Volunteer Award. Emily is also co-founder & Chair of the Board of StepUp, a non-profit aiming to achieve a breakthrough in Canadian energy management performance by putting gender equity, diversity and inclusion at the heart of the transition to a low carbon economy.
With close to 20 years of experience and selected as one of only 5 Canadian instructors for the Certified Energy Manager course, Emily has been featured in a Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) video and on Radio Canada, published 10 articles in respected journals such as CIM (Canadian Institute for Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum), Canadian Mining Journal, and Chemical Engineering Progress and has been a keynote speaker at multiple energy/sustainability conferences.
