Tony Makuch

President and CEO, Kirkland Lake Gold

Tony Makuch is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Kirkland Lake Gold. Prior to joining Kirkland Lake Gold in July 2016, Tony was the Chief Executive Officer of Lake Shore Gold Corp and was largely instrumental in building Lake Shore Gold from a junior explorer to a low-cost gold producer with quality operations. Tony has a proven track record of leadership in the gold mining industry. Kirkland Lake Gold, under Tony’s leadership along a with strong management team, is creating significant value for its shareholders through its portfolio of high-grade, low-cost assets in two of the greatest mining jurisdictions in the world - Canada and Australia. Tony holds a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Waterloo in Ontario, and both a Masters of Science Degree in Engineering and a Masters of Business Administration from Queen's University in Ontario.

George Hemingway

Managing Partner and Head of Innovation Practice, Stratalis

George Hemingway is Managing Partner and leads the Innovation Practice at Stratalis where he advises the leaders of companies, organizations and countries on the future and how to succeed in uncertain times. Considered one of the leading futurists in the mining industry, he regularly keynotes at venues ranging from the World Mining Congress to NASA and the Pentagon. He has advised many of the world’s leading natural resource and industrial companies, ranging from Vale, Anglo American and BHP to BASF and the Air Force on how their operations and organizations can best pivot and transform to succeed. In addition to corporate boards, he is passionate about supporting the next generation of leaders as a board member to the Chamber Orchestra of New York, Moon Mark Aerospace and the Lassonde Institute of Mining at the University of Toronto. He holds an MBA from Columbia Business School and a BS from the Stern School of Business at NYU.

Don Duval

CEO, NORCAT

Don has spent more than two decades leading, growing, and transforming organizations and businesses, working with multinational companies, tech start-ups, academic/research institutions, governments and clients around the world. As CEO of NORCAT, he has transformed the organization to become a global, multi-faceted enterprise focused on providing programs, services and resources to prepare current and future workers and tech entrepreneurs with the right skills, competencies, and confidence to succeed. In addition, Don is also the founder and co-managing partner of the Sudbury Catalyst Fund, a unique $5M co-investment seed capital venture fund based in Sudbury, Ontario. Previously, Don served as VP of Strategy/Operations for the MaRS Discovery District, an Investment Director with MaRS Investment Accelerator Fund, and as Senior Manager within Deloitte Consulting. He’s an active angel investor and holds a variety of Board positions. Academically he holds an undergraduate degree in Chemistry from Queen’s University and a Master of Applied Science and Engineering from the University of Toronto.

Brad Terhune

Senior Geologist and Cost Analyst, Costmine

Brad Terhune is an expert in cost estimation and economic analysis, focusing on the potential of proposed mineral development projects from early exploration through prefeasibility stage. He is also responsible for key mine equipment and supply cost databases. Prior to joining Costmine, Brad supervised and carried out mineral exploration efforts for numerous clients in a variety of geological settings in North America and Africa. Brad holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Geology and Geophysics from the University of Missouri – Rolla and a Masters of Science Degree in Geology and Geological Engineering from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology.

Emily Thorn Corthay

Founder and CEO, Thorn Associates

Emily Thorn Corthay, MASc., P.Eng, CEM, CMVP, is Founder & CEO of Thorn Associates, a decarbonization and energy management consulting corporation specializing in the mining & metals sector, and past Director of Energy Optimization and Management at Hatch Ltd., an international engineering consulting firm.

Awarded the 2020 International Energy Engineer of the Year by the Association of Energy Engineers and the 2018 Laureate of the RelèveTO Young Professional Award, Emily has helped her clients to implement over $100M in energy savings and >500,000 tCO2e reduction through decarbonization strategies, energy/carbon audits, energy/carbon design reviews, energy efficiency and electrification improvement projects, energy management information system studies and implementation.

Emily is Past Chair of the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers’ (OSPE’s) Energy Task Force and was an elected Director of the OSPE Board (2016-2019) whose volunteer impacts were recognized with Emily being selected for the 2021 OSPE President’s Volunteer Award. Emily is also co-founder & Chair of the Board of StepUp, a non-profit aiming to achieve a breakthrough in Canadian energy management performance by putting gender equity, diversity and inclusion at the heart of the transition to a low carbon economy.

With close to 20 years of experience and selected as one of only 5 Canadian instructors for the Certified Energy Manager course, Emily has been featured in a Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) video and on Radio Canada, published 10 articles in respected journals such as CIM (Canadian Institute for Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum), Canadian Mining Journal, and Chemical Engineering Progress and has been a keynote speaker at multiple energy/sustainability conferences.

Mark Fellows

Co-Founder, Director - Commercial, Skarn Associates

Mark has over 30 years experience providing strategic advice on metal markets, exploration, development projects, operating mines and corporate development. Mark’s expertise includes asset evaluation, benchmarking and optimisation, and encompasses, geology, mining, ore processing, and mining finance. He has conducted investment appraisals of numerous companies, mining projects and mining sector services businesses. Prior to co-founding Skarn, Mark led the metals & mining consulting business at SNL Financial. His career started in 1987 as an exploration geologist with Anglo American Corporation in Southern Africa. He went on to work for junior diamond and gold explorers in West and East Africa. He subsequently spent 13 years at Brook Hunt & Associates Ltd (now Wood Mackenzie) where he held the position of Director with primary responsibility for bespoke consulting work. From 2009 Mark was Managing Director of GFMS Mine Economics Limited, a business co-founded with GFMS Limited, which was sold to Thomson Reuters in 2011. Mark graduated from University of Liverpool with a B.Sc. (Hons) in Geology.

Luke Mahoney

Head of Technology and Innovation, Vale Base Metals

Luke Mahony is Head of Technology and Innovation for Vale Base Metals. This role includes leading the Low Carbon Agenda for Base Metals. Prior to moving to Canada, Luke headed up the Planning and Engineering department for Vale’s Coal Business based in Mozambique for 5 years. Prior to working for Vale, he worked 10 years for BHP in various managerial roles covering technical, operational and financial positions. Luke holds three Masters’ Degrees in Mining Engineering, Geomechanics and Finance, a Bachelor of Engineering in Mining Engineering plus other Executive and Technical statutory qualifications.

Maarten van Koppen

VP, Product Management, MacLean Engineering

Maarten van Koppen joined MacLean in May 2020 and is currently transitioning into VP, Product Management. Maarten brings 12 years of experience as a mining engineer in Canada. Maarten graduated with a Masters of Science in Resource Engineering from Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands in 2008 and completed his MBA at the Edinburgh Business School with Specialism in Strategic Planning in 2019.

For the majority of Maarten’s career, he focussed on project development, with the most notable project being the all-electric Borden Mine Project in Northeastern Ontario. Maarten’s role was to oversee all engineering from scratch to prefeasibility study, and to compile the prefeasibility study and business case. After completion of that study Maarten continued to be involved in long term engineering challenges and in securing significant public funding for the project. Borden achieved commercial production on schedule and under budget in 2019. In Maarten’s new role at MacLean he oversees the product portfolio and product & technology development pipeline to continue to bring value to MacLean customers for years to come.

Brian Huff

VP of Technology for BU BHEV, Sandvik

Brian is the Vice President of Technology and Product Line for the BHEV (Battery and Hybrid Electric Vehicle) Business Unit, which is part of the Load and Haul Division of Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions. Brian has more than 27 years of experience working with battery electric vehicles. He holds a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California at Davis and worked as a researcher there for 9 years prior to co-founding Artisan Vehicles. Artisan was a pioneer in the battery electric mining equipment industry and has had battery equipment with their technology operating in underground hard rock mines for over 10 years. Artisan was acquired by Sandvik in February of 2018 and has recently launched a pair of Sandvik branded battery powered mining machines, the LH518B, an 18 tonne LHD and the TH550B, a 50 tonne haultruck. Their other products include 4 and 10 tonne LHDs.

Daniella Dimitrov

Executive VP and CFO, IAMGOLD

Daniella is Executive Vice President and the CFO of IAMGOLD Corporation where she oversees all aspects of finance, information technology and investor relations. She joined IAMGOLD in the spring of 2021 from Sprott Capital Partners, where she was Partner, Investment Banking. Prior to Sprott, she served as CEO of Orvana Minerals, a junior gold/copper producer, as Executive Vice Chair of Baffinland Iron, an iron ore developer, as COO of Dundee Securities, and in various corporate development roles in mining and financial services. Daniella also has 15+ years of governance experience serving or having served on a number of boards in mining, oil and gas and industrials space. She is currently a director of Nexa Resources, Chemtrade Logistics and a member of the Mining Advisory Group to the Ontario government.

Dr. Erin Bobicki

Associate Professor of Mineral Processing, University of Alberta

Dr. Erin R. Bobicki is an Associate Professor of mineral processing in the department of Chemical and Materials Engineering at the University of Alberta. Professor Bobicki’s research interests include microwave applications in mineral processing, comminution, bioreagent development, the rheology of complex mineral slurries, and value recovery from waste materials. She has worked as a researcher and plant metallurgist for Vale, as a Process Technology Development Engineer for Intel Corporation, and most recently was an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto. She is currently commercializing microwave technology for the mining industry with Sepro Mineral Systems, and is a Founding Director of Aurora Hydrogen, a start-up developing technology for emission-free hydrogen production.

Dr. Stefan Hrabar

CEO and Co-Founder, Emesent

Dr. Stefan Hrabar has been at the forefront of drone autonomy R&D for nearly 20 years. Following his PhD in Computer Science / Robotics on this topic, he spent 13 years at CSIRO where he continued his work on vision and lidar-based perception and navigation for drones. He led the development and commercialisation of Hovermap in CSIRO, and co-founded Emesent in 2018 to bring this ground-breaking technology to market.

Marc C. Elliot

Marketing Director – Mining, Metals & Minerals and Pulp, Paper & Wood, Eaton

Marc C. Elliott, has over 25 years of experience with Eaton Corporation serving in roles of sales engineer, product manager, engineering manager, regional sales manager and plant manager before being appointed to his current role as Marketing Director – Mining, Metals & Minerals and Pulp, Paper & Wood of Eaton’s electrical business. Marc has a broad range of experience with industry solutions related to power distribution, energy management, motor control and factory automation serving the process industries. He is involved in a variety of global industry standards and presently serves as an active member of the IEEE Industry Applications Society (IAS) Cement Industry Committee, the IEEE IAS Pulp and Paper Industry Committee, the Association of Iron & Steel Technology (AIST) Electrical Applications Technical Committee and the AIST Digital Transformation Committee.

Jeffrey Walsh

Product Line Manager - Industrial Controls, Eaton

Jeffrey Walsh, has over 22 years of experience with Eaton Industries Canada. During that time, he’s served in roles of increasing responsibilities including, VFD product specialist, technology application engineer, and plant manager before being appointed to his current role as product line manager for industrial controls. Jeff has a broad range of experience with industry solutions related to low voltage power distribution and motor control.

Gary Poxleitner

Principal Mining Consult, SRK

Gary Poxleitner is a Principal Mining Engineer and Practice Leader at SRK’s Sudbury office. He has 30 years of underground mine engineering experience in including technical support, mergers and acquisitions, due diligence, audits, mine cost estimation, mine process optimization and operational improvement. Gary has worked with almost every extractable commodity, from near surface to ultra-deep producing mines in over 45 nations and on every continent. Within Canada, he has worked at Giant Mine in Yellowknife, Myra Falls Mine on Vancouver Island, and multiple nickel-copper mines within the Sudbury Basin. Gary serves on a number of boards, including with SRK Consulting, CIM and Camiro.

Harold Jonker

Underground Drills Business Line Manager, Sandvik

Harold Jonker serves as the Underground Drills Business Line Manager for Sandvik Mining and Rock Technologies in Canada, where he oversees supply of underground hard-rock drilling solutions and drives drilling innovations that add value to the mining industry.

Prior to his current role, Harold held a product management position in Australia supporting the market with application knowledge on Sandvik’s range of development drills, production drills, mobile raise bore drills, and ground support drills.

He holds a Bachelor in Engineering from the University of Manitoba and diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology from Red River College.

Siri C. Genik

Principal and Founder, Bridge Consult

Siri has spent over 25 years working on major capital projects around the world. She has worked in the Natural Resource and Infrastructure industries. During the course of her career, Siri has developed particular expertise in Sustainability & ESG, Stakeholder Engagement and Governance, with a strong focus on Project Management and Supply Chain. Siri has worked with the Board Room, Leadership as well as Project Delivery teams. Siri currently runs BRIDGE©, a boutique consultancy providing non-quantitative strategy services, advising her clients on ESG and Risk Management interfacing with Commercial and Supply Chain issues. Prior to running her own business Siri worked with BHP Canada as Head of Project Services. Siri is a director of the PDAC, Co-chair of the Sustainability and Lands and Regulations Committees. She is a member of Council of the PGO, as well as a director of two exploration mining companies. Siri recently received the 2019 “Distinguished Lecturer Award for CSR” from the Canadian Institute of Mining.
